How to take care of your jewelry?

Sterling silver is an alloy of pure silver and a tiny bit of copper and other metals that harden it. Even though pure silver doesn't oxidize, we rarely use it in it's pure form because it is too malleable and could break easily.

There are some factors causing oxydation that you can't do too much about, like the acidity of your skin (sweat), but there are other factors you can control to keep your 925 jewelry stunning.

  1. wash your jewelry. The easiest is to take your shower with it to remove the natural oils and cosmetics you may use, then dry them.
  2. rub them with a clean, dry and soft cloth. Maybe you know the feeling of rubbing  your ring on your jeans and admiring how shiny it becomes. This is the process of polishing and sterling pieces love it.
  3. a tooth brush and some tooth paste, then dry with a clean and soft cloth.
  4. don't put perfume and corrosive cosmetics directly on them.
  5. when not worn, keep in a dry and clean environment.

Some people like wearing silver colour, others will be more attracted by the solar energy of gold.

But what is gold ?

I often hear misconceptions between gold and golden colour, they both have a very different meaning. While yellow bronze is of golden colour when polished, it is more affordable but might oxidize a lot on some skins. Until 2025 I offered similar prices for sterling silver and bronze however nowadays, due to the increase of the price of silver, I can't offer that anymore.

Most people wouldn't be able to wear bronze earrings without having an allergic reaction and your finger might change colour if you wear a bronze ring. I find it beautiful though when nicely polished.

The care for your bronze piece is the same I would recommend for silver.

For the gold colour lovers who can't commit to the price of solid gold, vermeil is also an option (all options on my website named "plated silver" are actually "vermeil" pieces). It is a solid sterling silver piece coated with at least 3 microns of 18 carat gold. 3 microns might not seem like much however it is more that simple plated jewelry. (note that a "plated" piece of jewelry doesn't tell you what metal is under the thin coating of gold. It might be copper, silver or worse, nickel, tin etc...). Whereas "vermeil" exclusively describes sterling silver pieces covered in gold. In other words, a precious piece of jewelry.

The gold will wear off so I offer a service of re-plating, just reach out with a picture of your jewelry and I will send you a quote.

Because of its amazing properties and luxurious appearance, solid gold has been one of the most valued material across time. All my pieces are available in solid gold upon request. It will not oxidize nor change, no matter what the karat is. The only thing that might happen is that little scratches might appear on the surface. A good polishing by a jeweller will give its luster back.

What is a gold karat? (not to be mistaken with a stone carat) In Canada, jewelry works with 10, 14, 18, 20 and 24 karat gold. 24 karat is pure gold, 12 karat (that commonly doesn't exist) would be 50% gold with 50% alloy making it much harder. Because pure gold, just like silver is very malleable and breaks and scratches much more easily. 24 karat gold has a rich yellow colour, 10 karat gold is a little more pink. Most people couldn't tell the difference without looking at the marking that indicates the metal quality.

If you purchase a solid gold piece from me, you can request a marking indicating what metal composes it.
